Within the Archaeological Park Neapolis, are certainly preserved the most important and the ancient vestiges of Siracusa, essential evidences of the polis past.
Due to the digging works of mid-1900s the Neapolis Park return to be in current conditions: it is an extraordinary environmental framework, an area of 35 hectares where are found the principal ancient monuments exactly in the core of the modern Siracusa. The settlement of the archaeological area respect the old project of Tyrant Dionisio I, who turned Neapolis area in a monumental zone in 405 b.C.
You will discover:
Greek Theatre: currently the most famous monument in town, but even in ancient times was a significant symbol of Greek west-world, being the most important and prestigious arena for international performances (still used in summer for the fascinating Classical plays);
Altar of Ierone II: dated to the 3rd century b.C., dedicated to “Jupiter Liberator” (Zeus Eleutherios), where were sacrified 450 bulls during Eleutheria feasts celebration;
Roman Amphitheatre: dated to the 3rd-4th century a.D., was the most important public monument at that time;
Latomia del Paradiso: huge former limestone quarry, today a plentiful garden where is found the impressive Orecchio di Dionisio, an incredible man-made cave shaped like an ear.
